Disney Villains by MattesWorks Disney Villains by MattesWorks
If you haven’t noticed, I love the Disney villains. I just wanted to do a piece showing them all off. (At least my favorites.) Each one of these sketches are original Josh designs. I spent the most time on Maleficent. I wanted to make sure she was perfect. She’s my all-time favorite. I put her at the front because I wanted to give her a crazy fabulous pose. I pictured her as if she was a carved woman at the head of old fashioned ship. I wanted her evil yet still beautiful. As far as Ursula/Vanessa I couldn’t really pick which version of her to do, so I did both. I wanted to keep her pretty like the rest of the female villains I used, but I loved the idea of the tentacles. And the two L’s seemed too close to each other to use one for a different character. I definitely wanted to use Dr. Facilier, but he’s usually featured very tall, thin and reed like. I wanted to capture his “sneakiness” and I remember one of the older Princess and the Frog movie posters. I used that as my inspiration and he fit so perfectly into the “S.”
When I’d finished my original idea, there were still a lot of villains I love but didn’t get to use. My partner suggested that I use the bottom half of the letters in the same way I did the tops. I didn’t want the colors or sketch qualities to venture form the tips of the letters, but I wanted to use the bottoms in some way. I placed the Queen of Hearts silhouette first because the “A” was the only letter not being used. It turned out great. Once I thought of using negative and positive space Cruella DeVille happened and I feel she’s like, the best design decision I’ve ever made. :)
Check out the other version of this!

Cool! I like how you incorporated the shadows of the other villains, and I can see how you used the first cover art for the Princess and the Frog with Facilier!

I so love this!  I'm a huge Villains fan myself, and of course Maleficent is the top of this list!
